Witness: Frederick Arthur Branch

Defense attorney: We have had all that, Mr. Branch. Tell me of anything in regard to your- self. Did someone appear for you personally?

Frederick Branch: Yes, my grand- mother.

Defense attorney: Did she come close to you?

Frederick Branch: I went over to her, but she came half-way.

Defense attorney: About how close did you get to her?

Frederick Branch: To within about a foot of her.

Defense attorney: What did you see?

Frederick Branch: The height of her was about to my shoulder; she was very slenderly built, and I saw hundreds of wrinkles upon her face.

Defense attorney: Would she answer the description of a little old lady?

Frederick Branch: Yes.

Defense attorney: Did she speak?

Frederick Branch: Yes.

Defense attorney: Did you notice the accent she spoke in?

Frederick Branch: Yes, sir, a Suffolk accent, very similar to mine, but a soft voice.

Defense attorney: Yours is not a Suffolk accent, is it?

Frederick Branch: No.

Defense attorney: Yours is an Essex accent?

Frederick Branch: Yes.

Defense attorney: You spoke to her with an Essex accent, and she answered you with a Suffolk accent?

Frederick Branch: Yes.

Defense attorney: Could you imitate the Suffolk accent?

Judge: It is not much good, because the jury may not recognize it.

Defense attorney: Did you recognize the Suffolk accent?

Frederick Branch: Yes.

Defense attorney: And she spoke to you with a Suffolk accent?

Frederick Branch: Yes.

Defense attorney: Was it a stout figure, or a slender figure?

Frederick Branch: A slender figure.

Defense attorney: Could you indicate the height with your hand?

Frederick Branch: Up to my shoulder, sir.

Defense attorney: Apart from the fact that she had wrinkles which does not amount to much you could not confirm that it was your grandmother, could you?

Frederick Branch: No, but that was confirmed to me by my mother a fortnight later when I went back.

Defense attorney: You did not know your grandmother yourself, did you?

Frederick Branch: No, sir.

Defense attorney: But you did notice that she had wrinkles?

Frederick Branch: Yes.

Judge: You are satisfied it was your grandmother?

Frederick Branch: Yes, my Lord.

Prosecuting attorney: What did your grannie say to you?

Frederick Branch: My grandmother said, “Hullo, Fred; don’t worry. I am watching over you”.

Prosecuting attorney: No more?

Frederick Branch: No more.

Prosecuting attorney: Did you say anything?

Frederick Branch: Yes, I called her out of the cabinet.

Prosecuting attorney: Did you see the curtains move?

Frederick Branch: Yes.

Prosecuting attorney: Was she all in white?

Frederick Branch: Yes.

Prosecuting attorney: Did she go back into the cabinet?

Frederick Branch: No, sir.

Prosecuting attorney: What happened?

Frederick Branch: She disappeared through the floor.

Judge: Was it something white?

Frederick Branch: Yes.

Prosecuting attorney: How far was she out of the cabinet?

Frederick Branch: About two feet.

Prosecuting attorney: Did you hear Albert speak?

Frederick Branch: Yes.

Prosecuting attorney: What sort of accent did he have?

Frederick Branch: I should say it would be the Oxford accent; a very cultured voice.
